Having to reformat and reinstall when the final version comes out just kind of Thanks I'll wait a while and see what problems any of you have first, then I'll go for it in June. Do you think having a hotmail address will qualify for this? I tried using it but everything is grayed out or just not working except for the people under details that are listed. Does anyone know if you'll have to do a complete reinstall, or if you can simply upgrade from the beta?

The RC will however allow you to upgrade from Windows Vista. While the hot-off-the-presses Windows 7 release candidate has no radical changes from the beta version released in January, it does have a bundle of interface tweaks as well as some minor changes to security and networking features. From more keyboard shortcuts to new control over jump lists from the taskbar to some new and trippy desktop backgrounds, UI adjustments abound in Windows 7 RC.

But these are workmanlike tweaks, not new features. Nevertheless, Windows 7 RC does have two brand-new features that are generating buzz: Remote Media Streaming, which that lets users stream media to PCs outside of the home, and Windows XP Mode, a controversial add-on in Windows 7 that runs Windows XP applications in a virtual machine. Mostly for consumers and small businesses, Remote Media Streaming in Windows 7 extends the media sharing abilities of Homegroup — which links Windows 7 PCs in a home to share media — to the outside world.

Remote Media Streaming "allows you to take media sharing on the go," says Microsoft's Price. So, the media library full of songs and photos that a person could access on any laptop in their home network can be accessed anywhere there is a Wi-Fi connection.

I think this feature will be a lot of fun for people," says Price. I'm not copying the songs and photos over or synchronizing them. I can just view the library and play them. This virtualization feature designed for enterprises is a free, downloadable add on to Windows 7 RC.

Windows XP Mode is currently in beta.

XP Mode is not for consumers, and will only work with the Enterprise, Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows 7. It is designed for enterprises with mission-critical apps that have not been updated to work with Vista or Windows 7.

Users can run the app in XP Mode until they upgrade to a newer version. XP Mode is likely Microsoft's response to enterprise IT pros who have been hesitant to upgrade from XP because of compatibility worries and negative perceptions of Vista. The add-on does give IT pros a much-needed compatibility option, but XP Mode has been met with some early criticism, including predictions of support headaches for IT proswho will now have to manage two versions of Windows and could become spoiled by virtualization and delay making sure all their apps work with Windows 7.

But with regards to easing compatibility fears of the XP faithful, Windows XP Mode is arguably Microsoft's most compelling case to date. Here are the latest Insider stories. More Insider Sign Out. I would like to be able to connect to the remote computer using Remote Desktop so that I can help the user without them having to do anything. On Windows Terminal Server, you can connect to an existing session using "Remote Control" so that the user and another party can both control the system at the same time. Is there any way to do this in Windows 7? I am willing to invest in the Pro version if that's what it takes. My understanding is that by default, when you connect to Windows 7 Pro with remote desktop, the local screen goes blank.

Remote Desktop does not allow you to interact with the session, that is why it locks the screen. I would suggest you try another program such as VNC. Did this solve your problem?

Windows 7 RC is a fully tested version. But you might still face a few problems like the following. Though windows 7 RC is a pre-release candidate, Microsoft does not provide technical support for it and the computer may crash, leading to data loss, as it is not yet the final product.

Hence it is advisable to download and test windows 7 RC, only if you are a reasonably experienced PC user who knows how to back up the computer, format a hard drive, burn an ISO file to DVD, and install an operating system from scratch.

You should also be comfortable in troubleshooting problems on your own. It is also better if you backup all your data before you install windows 7 RC.

It is even better to test it on a spare PC and not on your primary home or business PC. After installing Windows 7, you will need to reinstall applications and restore your files.

You will also do well to remember that if you want to upgrade to Windows 7 later on, you need to do a fresh, clean install. Note that windows 7 RC will expire June 1,and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, Download and experience Windows 7 RC until then!

PNutts Thanks for posting your explanation. Hi Jess, You will be doing exactly the same as me. I run Vista and Windows 7 as a dual boot. Whether there will be any issue one cannot say because, I for one, do not possess a leaked copy of the RC. With any beta you should always expect problems, but as for your plan being 'doable' the answer is yes.

Of course, because we have been 'asked' to do it I will also be upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista just to check out the 'suspected' anomolies. However, I have an image of Vista so any major problems and I can quickly reinstall the original copy of Vista. See the following website for the official announcement. Thankfully, there are a couple of ways to download Windows 7 ISOs, legally and for free, either by using Torrents or a free app that provides links straight from Microsoft.

Many of us bought our copy of Windows 7 pre-installed with a new desktop or laptop PC. Usually, we would get a "recovery disk" or a recovery partition, to reinstate the operating system to its default settings. What we buy is the unique character product key. If our Windows 7 PC didn't have Windows preinstalled and doesn't have a sticker, we can use special applications to get the Windows 7 product key.

Some apps will even work in cases where we can't boot into Windows, as long as the hard drive is functional. Just check out our guide on how to find the Windows product key.

Even though it would work, downloading Windows 7 from questionable sources is never a good idea. For all we know, the ISO could contain a host of malware: rootkits, trojans, keyloggers; you name it. We could download Windows 7 and be sure that the ISO was clean and untampered. So, as OEM owners, what are we supposed to do? Steal a disk? Beg friends and strangers for a Windows 7 DVD? They have all the different English versions and even a few in other languages.

To download Windows 7 using a torrent file, we will need a torrent client. In the example, we will be using the popular torrent client qBittorrent. So, if you already have a torrent client, you don't need to install qBittorrent.
